No one is going to mind Yahoo! buying the website and gaining a few extra million dollars per year from the minimal advertising; what we will be upset with is if a company like Yahoo! then changes the website to increase casual users and decrease dedicated users. As much as is does sound like a load of bullshit for someone to buy Tumblr, it’s a possibility. I Personally think it should stay independent and I hope David Karp keeps a hold of it like his own child. Or we make enough noise to where such major changes (if bought) will not happen. I would hate to see Tumblr turned into an advertising dump.

We’re not a ‘hip fad group’ to be marketed to. I hate the fact that’s all we look like to businesses in the end.

Hello everyone! Finals are over, but I have some unfortunate news.

One of the mods is retiring from the blog so that he can focus on school and his job. I wish him the best of luck.

I am also planning on changing a ton of things with the blog, another update on that will come soon.

Also here is a quick update on recent events.

Someone has allegedly reported that the Equestria Girl’s staff are planning on stepping down from their project. Keep in mindhowever that this comes from someone who does not work for DHX Media or Hasbro. So as far as we know it is a rumor.

Brony Analyst “TheoryBrony” has been kicked out of his house due to having stolen money from his roommates. Read more about it here.

Some clarification on Equestria L.A:

The artist that was banned from the convention was Steve Martin (Not the celebrity) this was because he was offering to sell porn outside the convention.

The Equestria L.A staff did not allow any filming of the VA panel in order to avoid a copyright claim by Disney since the actors were reading something from Star Wars, however the problem from the convention attendees had was the unprofessional response that the staff had given to them.

Finally there were a multitude of thefts during the convention and vendors who were selling artwork that was not their own (or without permission of the original artist).

1. The classic Bikini Armor. If you’re lucky you might get an actual shoulder-pad! If the designers even bother doing something more than just a regular bikini, you might get some accessories with stilettos! Exactly what I want in battle. For a extra nice touch; cameltoe.

2. The Lingerie ”Armor”. There’s absolutely nothing that protects you, but it looks really uncomfortable and nice in ~~bed~~ battle! Complete with some feathery, useless shoulder pads!

3. The ever so Stylish Swimsuit! This is usually the armor you get before you get the upgrade Bikini Armor. Bonus points if a choker, thigh-high boots/stockings and a half mask is included!

4. The Abstract Art. Yes, we’re all wondering how the hell that works; how does that thing stay on, how does she walk with those shoes, how on earth is that supposed to protect her and why is half of her naked? All those questions is a part of the costume! They say art say more than thousand words.. or something!

5. The Dominatrix and/or Slave outfit! For those kinky players out there! Complete with leather or latex, fishnets, chains, chokers and whips! Bonus points of the stilettos are sky-high!

6. The Stereotype Shaman or Barbarian! Because she’s clearly so wild and ~exotic~ that she doesn’t need clothes! Best worn with tiny loincloth and underboob-straps!

7. The Cute Frilly Dress! Something you’d LOVE to wear, CONSTANTLY…. in battle! Usually the female “robe” costume, but hey, robes doesn’t show her nice legs! ): For absolute effect, add garterbelts.

8. I call this the Why?. Everything is so massive and made of thick material, but we wouldn’t want to cover her girly parts now, would we? Clearly NO ONE would be aiming there!

9. Nature Thing Something. If you’re not of human race and belong to the nature, expect your outfit to look something like this! Feel completely ~~exposed~~ free! I didn’t even bother with this one, but clearly they don’t even do that in games either. But since you’re not human, it’s totally okay!

10. This is best known as “Just In Case You Forgot”. Have a decent looking outfit, but then they suddenly cut obvious holes around your privates, just reminding you that you have breasts, a butt and a vagina! How nice of them! Bonus if you don’t have a boob-hole, but instead boob-chest-plate!

11. The Everyday Archer! A very classic outfit, complete with a corset and a mini-skirt! Don’t forget the cape, but heavens forbid that you wear it longer than your hips! Then we wouldn’t be able to see your nice butt or legs from behind! *sad face*

12. The Creative Healer! She isn’t supposed to be in close-combat, and sometimes doesn’t even use weapons other than a staff, so minimal armor is understandable… that’s why we give you a dress that leaves you wondering how that thing stays on, and with a leg-slip-thing! We wouldn’t want you to forget you have legs, after all!

13. And finally, your Average Sci-Fi chick! This one is an absolute classic. It has weird cut-outs everywhere, extreme cleavage, patterns pointing to your crotch and chest, and CRAZY shoes! Don’t forget the skin tight, often nearly-transparent, glossy fabric. Perfect battle wear, absolutely perfect!

The New York Times has posted yet another article on the upcoming My Little Pony: Equestria Girls movie. It is accompanied by the first ever trailer for the film. Unfortunately, it does not seem as though I can embed it here. From the article:

Hasbro, the toy company that brought its Transformers and G.I. Joe properties to movie theaters, has set its sights on its next summer blockbuster: My Little Pony.

The ponies, a Hasbro staple for 30 years, have experienced a resurgence of popularity lately, thanks in part to the TV series “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.” Hoping to build on that interest, Hasbro recently revealed plans for brand extension called Equestria Girls.

The new property will get the red-carpet treatment when it premieres as a full-length animated feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. The movie, created by Hasbro Studios, the company’s production division, will then be released in more than 200 theaters nationwide; its trailer will start appearing in theaters on Wednesday.

“We are responding to the desire by our fans to experience the brand in more ways,” said John A. Frascotti, Hasbro’s chief marketing officer. “They imagined themselves as which pony they would be or which pony they identified with the most.”

So Hasbro created Equestria Girls, a parallel world in which the My Little Pony characters were reconceived as teenage girls in high school. To maintain continuity, Hasbro retained the same creative talent, animation style and message of friendship.

“Our goal is to stay true to who those characters are,” said Meghan McCarthy, the head writer for the movie, adding that the high school setting allowed for new storytelling possibilities. “It’s new but still an extension of our mythology.”

The movie — titled “My Little Pony: Equestria Girls” — will be released on DVD later in the United States and other markets worldwide, followed by a television debut on the Hub network in the fall.

“Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions.

Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time.

In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows:

The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.

In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts. This may sound outrageous, but think about how you react when precocious children dominate the talk at an adult party. As women begin to make inroads into formerly ‘male’ domains such as business and professional contexts, we should not be surprised to find that their contributions are not always perceived positively or even accurately.”

As a teacher, I give girls what I hope is a lot of attention. I don’t know if I give girls their fair share, but I aspire to, especially after noticing that boys are willing to use their greater share of teachers’ attention to get girls who they feel aren’t being quiet and docile enough punished. I have therefore acquired a reputation for “caring more about the girls.” This has had two marked results: Some straight boys have gotten more hostile toward me, and most girls have gotten more confident around me. This makes me think I’m doing something right.

Longer thoughts on how this phenomenon relates to sexual harassment in classrooms, if you’re interested: The girls figured out I won’t report them if they hit boys who are sexually harassing them, I’ll only report the boys. This led to an increase in how often girls got the last word and boys got smacked in my classes, and, also, to a DECREASE IN HOW OFTEN GIRLS GOT SEXUALLY HARASSED. The sexual harassers seem to have been depending on the sort of “equal blame” and “retaliation is never warranted” and “don’t hurt others’ feelings” perspectives so many schools try to instill in kids; the sexual harassers were usually the ones bringing me into the situation by saying, “Miss, she hit me! You should write her up!” Once they figured out I was only ever going to respond, “If you don’t treat girls like that, they won’t hit you,” the girls got more confident and the sexual harassers largely shut the fuck up.

In schools, fighting against sexual harassment is often punished exactly the same as, or more severely than, sexual harassment — a lot of discipline codes make no distinction between violence and violence in self-defence, and violence is ALWAYS the highest level of disciplinary infraction, whereas verbal sexual harassment rarely is. Sexual harassers, at least in the schools I’ve been in, rely heavily on GETTING GIRLS IN TROUBLE WITH HIGHER AUTHORITIES as a strategy of harassment — creating an external punishment that penalises girls for and therefore discourages girls from fighting back. Sexual harassers are willing to use their greater share of floorspace to ask to get girls who won’t date them punished. By and large, teachers do punish those girls when they swear or hit. Schools condition girls to ignore sexual harassment by punishing them when they speak up or fight back instead.

Once the sexual harassers in my classes understood that girls wouldn’t be punished for rejecting them, they backed off around me. And there started to be a flip in what conversations I get called into — girls are telling me when boys are being nasty (too loud and dominant), instead of boys telling me when girls are being uncooperative (louder and more dominant than boys think they should be).

People like Alex S. and Archie V. have basically been demonized because they left the brony fanbase and this is how I’m gonna start this little rant. Alex, Archie. I apologize on behalf of the fucking idiots on the internet and in the fan-base. These are a kind of victim of reverse fame…

Normally i don’t get involved with stuff like this (or, more appropriately, I’ve gone out of my way to avoid getting involved with this kinda thing for a while), but i just wanna shed some light and give a different perspective on what you’re angry about. I’ve seen similar rants and arguments in the past, and i’m a bit tired of how dehumanizing they can be, and how, whether intended or not, they’re ultimately the result of holding “famous” (if they can really be called it) musicians to a higher, stricter standard than others.

1. I’d like to make, or to be frank, reiterate the statement that popular fandom musicians, artists, voice actors, writers, etc etc, are all people. At the end of the day, we’re all just a bunch of joe blows and jane does that have interests, hobbies, lives, and so on.

2. You claim that brony musicians have “excuses” for not participating in calls with people, but will talk with others whom they know and are already friends with. No offence, but what’s your point? I’m pretty sure you talk to your friends, too. As for the excuses,

a) maybe they actually are legit excuses? I have a job, i have a life, and there are times where i have to tell someone i can’t talk, friend or not, because i have to go hop a bus or something. It’s nothing personal, shit just happens.

b) look at it like this: you have a bit of a following, a couple of thousand youtube subscribers, your stuff ends up on EQD regularly, you’re getting 20-30 comments, messages, tumblr asks, tweets, and facebook requests a day, quite possible of each. 1. That’s hella overwhelming at times, and with life getting in the way, it can get insanely difficult to keep track of. That’s why people who actually are famous hire people, groups of people, to keep track of that shit for them, ‘cause it really is a hassle once you get to that point; even then, you’ll forget people, you’ll be frustrated, and at times you’ll have to let people down to various degrees. 2. there is no contract or unspoken deal that states that ANYBODY is obliged to talk to people, regardless of their degree of “fame” - some people are generally anti-social, and only feel comfortable talking to people on a regular basis that they have come to know really well (see also: friends) Being famous doesn’t mean they have to suck it up and deal with it, and they shouldn’t be expected to do so, ‘cause it’s unfair to them. For those who aren’t anti social, sometimes we don’t want to talk to new people, sometimes we actually are busy, and sometimes it’s just really hard to keep a conversation going when there’s nothing to connect on or to go off of. Fame isn’t even a factor at that point, ‘cause i’ve seen countless posts on facebook and tumblr joking and satirising the classic “hey, what’s up?” “not much, you?” “same” conversation. If you don’t know someone, you shouldn’t have to feel obligated to find something to talk about just because they took the time to say “hi.” Now, from experience, i know that plucking up the courage to do so can be harrowing and stressful, but if you don’t go into it with something to actually talk ABOUT, why should you expect the other person (famous or not) to pick up the slack when you’re the one who initiated it?

But back to the excuses: if they really are lying about having to do stuff, maybe they’re just trying to let them down softly? As a person, while talking to another person I know i’d much rather hear “I have to go make dinner” than “I really don’t want to talk to you/think this conversation is going anywhere”. Like, there’s no way of saying it that DOESN’T come as a bit of a blow, and most people don’t want to come off as rude or offensive. On top of that, you get enough messages a day that go nowhere and start telling more and more people that you don’t want to talk to them, then people start saying you’re an asshole, or that you’re “letting the fame get to your head” (that’s a really popular one). (and of course, all this is again assuming that the excuses aren’t legitimate, ‘cause to use your example as a reference, maybe conversation A was started at a bad time, but conversation B was from either earlier or later, when the time wasn’t bad.)

3. As for calling certain brony musicians spoiled, i’m gonna offer some first hand experience: I had to drop out of EQLA because i couldn’t raise the money to do so. I work a shitty job at odd hours, don’t make much on album sales, and have high rent, bills, and other living expenses to take care off. Ever since the last EQLA, i’ve gotten messages from more people than I can remember asking if i could come to the next one. Did I want to go? yes. But if i was just going for myself, and/or could have afforded to go out of pocket, I wouldn’t have asked for help with the finances, and most people in the fandom with any level of fame wouldn’t have, either. The reason we ask, and subsequently the reason people DO help us fundraise for it, is because people WANT us to go (for the SAME REASON people want to talk to us, so I’m sorry but your argument is a bit of hypocritical).

Look, I don’t know what to tell you. You’re obviously upset about something, because your screed was harsh and came off as being very entitled and dejected. But know this: being a “famous” person isn’t all that fun. Sometimes it fucking sucks. Once you get to a certain level of fame, people get judgmental, people expect things from you, you’re scrutinized for every action, and SOMEONE’s always upset at you for whatever reason, even if you’re the nicest guy on the planet. You become something besides human in the eyes of a lot of people, and quite frankly that can be really demoralizing and discouraging, especially considering that, when a person becomes “famous”, it’s generally because of something they actively like doing (which is why famous people tend to flock together, because they work in similar fields and share interests. Another reason? Because “famous” people don’t treat other “famous” people like their celebrities. It’s nothing personal, but not every famous person likes to answer questions about themselves all the time - sometimes they just like to sit back with people they’re comfortable with and make farts jokes and funny faces). Put bluntly, it’s why a lot of famous people start doing drugs and drinking heavily - it’s not because they think it’s cool, it’s usually to escape from the pressure and stress. And when people post little rants like yours demonizing people for mundane or necessary behaviors or habits, it gets very frustrating, and enough of them have the potential to make people just give up, ‘cause to some it’s just not worth the negative attention. (again, hypocrisy, because of your first point - the same people bitching about artists leaving were and are more often than not saying the same stuff you are in your rant about brony musicians in general).

In short, we’re just people, and it gets rather annoying and demoralizing when people, like yourself, get upset at us for doing stuff normal people would do merely because we’re famous. Sorry, dude.

Tarby is right. Becoming popular can get very stressful with so many people expecting things of you.

I for one do try as hard as I’ll allow myself to keep up with everyone who talks to me. But sometimes it gets overwhelming. I had to get a new Skype account because I simply couldn’t keep up with so many people talking to me, I felt bad for leaving all the random group chats I was added to with no one I know in them. I mean yes, it’s cowardly to run away like that and make a new account but I only did that so I didn’t have to delete people. Yes that’s weak but I didn’t know what else to do. On top of that, I get lots of people message me on Steam, tumblr, twitter, whatever. At times, it can get very hard to keep up with, on top of trying to live life, create music, spend time with loved ones, with friends, with family (all who fall under loved ones <3), and find time to just chill out and do sweet nothing.

I’m not trying to say that the more popular people in the fandom deserve special treatment because we’re spoiled by our popularity or something. I’m backing up Tarby in saying that we are only human, and it really does become difficult to keep everything in the balance and please absolutely everyone.

I hope I don’t sound spoiled or whatever. I’m tired today so I probably could have worded this better.

now, i’ve been on this here innernette a while. coming up on fifteen years. and i’ve spent a lot of that time being a loudmouthed jackass. i went through a period of several years where i was actively antagonistic, starting acerbic arguments over nonsense just because i enjoyed arguing.

i’ve been wracking my brains for some ten minutes here because, you see

i cannot think of one single time that someone told me to calm down or act nice or be respectful for its own sake

it must have happened, surely, right? yet not one incident in fifteen years comes to mind, even thinking about times i was a maximal jerkwad and someone should have called me out on it

yet mel is merely blogging (well, not even that), scrawling out quick responses to questions people come to her to ask, and there has been a constant theme over the years about how she’s not nice enough

It’s convention season once again*! Here’s some reminders, based on things I’ve seen.

NOW FOR A BIG WALL OF TEXT

For the first one, yes, we have characters we really like. And some costumes are very beautiful, cute, or sexy, what have you. That does not give anyone an excuse to get too close to that person.

Second: Don’t crowd too much. Others will want to see the merchandise too, so be fair,

Third: Don’t go around mocking beginner cosplayers. It’s not nice. Especially if they’re young. Everyone has beginnings. ~~even batman~~

Fourth: Yeah, do not ask those questions. No, it’s not funny. It can bother the people running the panel and the audience. Not everyone will think it’s funny that Pinkie Pie killed everyone in a fanfic, or if there are Bronies who like to interpet an innocent character to be abusive.

Fifth: Try not to step on the little kids, okay? If there’s a panel, let them go first in the question round if you can. They’re younger, and will not necessarily have the patience to wait through a trillion questions, and apply #4 to this.

*it’s actually always convention season with Bronies. You have more conventions than the Hub does recycled background characters.
